In 1968, the United States Congress established the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) for Children. The purpose of this program is to provide meals for children 18 years old or younger from low-income families during the summer months when school cafeterias are closed. This program is operated by the USDA, which provides funds (a set rate per meal served) for eligible sponsoring organizations (schools, public agencies and non-profits). For children participating in this program there is no enrollment application or paperwork required. CCJ supports the SFSP Center for Civil Justice unites efforts with Michigan Department of Education to find and increase sponsoring partners for counties with high economic need and low or nonexistent sponsorship. At the same time, CCJ helps to increase the attendance of children to the sites with less participation by helping sponsors and sites to market the program in their counties For more information about the Summer Food Service Program or if you are interested in becoming a sponsor or a site please call the Food and Nutrition Help Line: 1-800-481-4989.
